The Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant (Guarani: Itaipu, Spanish: Itaipú) is located on the Parana River, border between Brazil and Paraguay. Built by both countries between 1975 and 1982, Itaipu is currently the largest power plant in the world. Its name, which in Guarani means “the singing stone”, refers to the small island there used to be in its place before the work. With a lake that has an area of 1350 km² and stretches 150 miles from Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, and Ciudad del Este in Paraguay, to Guaíra and Salto del Guairá, besides 20 generating units of 700 MW each, Itaipu has a power generation of 14,000 MW. In 2008, the plant set a production record of 94.68 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), by providing 90% of the energy consumed by Paraguay and 19% of the energy consumed by Brazil.
